i’ve decided to keep all of my websites, blogs, online stuff add free. i had a revelation that i hated website ads with a passion and i have super respect for people and groups who have no advertising on their sites… so why was i wasting time researching about ads on my websites? i dunno. temporary lapse into douchebag-ery? maybe… caught up in the hype of “professional web douchebags”? more like it….
two quick observations in my weeks of researching the whole idea of websites and advertising:
i love creative types who have websites that have no advertising and yet plug their own quality product in subtle and creative ways…
the web is full of douchebag hacks who don’t care.
i am determined for the “me online” to be honest, true, good, caring, encouraging, sharp, & opinionated… basically the opposite of most of the crap that is peddled online.
hmmmm… can i say the word “crap” and still be all those good things? i hope so.
thanks to the few people who’ve taken the time to download the latest podcast episode… today i’ve been trying to work out why the feed is broken and why the podcast player is busted on the blog. like many other bloggers i love the amazing wordpress blogging platform and like many really clever types i use the amazing wordpress podcasting plug in “PodPress” created by the Mighty Seek. it has been a truly amazing part of my blogging experience. {note: i can never see/read “the mighty seek” without thinking of these awesome guys.}
podpress vs wordpress 2.6
so after spending a couple of hours going through the admin area of podpress and my blog, looking through itunes, trying to figure out wht the problem is… i finally had the brain wave to check the mighty seek forums and sure enough i found out i wasn’t the only nuff nuff. the podress plug in is broken under the awesomeness of some of the amazing features in wordpres 2.6… but Dan Kuykendall, the very clever fellow behind podpress has said he will try to get an update of podpress out before the end of the month.
so i got a question for you: a few of the podpress users are urging all podpress users to donate more money to Dan for the project {it is an amazing free, donate if ya wanna, style plug in}. am i totally wrong to instead of donating now, to pledge the money so it’s an incentive for him to get the upgrade out? i know if it was me doing it and i knew there was some cash coming in when i finished it, i’d go harder… just me? tight wad?
so in the meantime download the all new DJ PAINE SHOW episode 00 right here.
the dj paine show 00 – introduction
i am back in the land of the “podcasting”!
here is a 10 minute introduction to the all new “the dj paine show“. i lay out an overview of who i am, my brief history of podcasting, what i hope this new show will be, sneak peaks of upcoming interviews and i play snippits of 12 of my favourite songs. all of that in 10 minutes!! unbelievable…
if you can name all 12 songs and the artists in that section, i will give you a prize. seriously. i do not believe that any one human being alive could name all of those artists. am i just stupid believing that? prove me wrong! and get a prize.
suggestions? ideas? what do you want to be on the show? interview ideas? leave a comment.
tell all your friends and enemies. the dj paine show!
while out walking this morning my wonderful wife Benita had a channel 9 TV crew swoop past her and grab a sound bite about a very stupid “current affairs” story. it played tonight on that great bastion of TV journalism “A Current Affair”. the story is the usual fluff stupidity that gives rich americans such a great name around the world… so without any further ado, watch away, be careful if you blink you’ll miss benita’s insightful; “i guess it’s a matter of hygiene standards”
well, it’s taken way too long… but the blog is back and all new!
now you can glance down to the blog’s footer for this information but i just have to say a MASSIVE thank you to:
the amazing and generous Pat Loughery for helping with the overhaul. Pat’s insightful and rewarding blog is at www.patloughery.com and you can follow him on twitter: twitter.com/patl
the inspiring and creative Todd Hiestand for creating a great wordpress theme and then giving it away for free. Todd’s blog is at www.toddhiestand.com and his twitter: twitter.com/toddhiestand
the entire wordpress universe. what an amazing, enabling platform & resource!
YOU! thanks for being patient while this blog became a catalogue of all my twitter tweets! That “feature” is now turned off. so be don’t be afraid to subscribe to the blog, because there is some actual writing coming soon, not to mention the podcast is going to roll out, newly overhauled as well. some great interviews coming on the dj paine show so stick around.
just a quick note that Phillip Greenwood and his PhotoGeek Crew down in Melbourne had me as a guest on their popular photography podcast. have a listen and if you enjoy it {it’s not for everyone} subscribe in itunes and leave a comment on their website about how awesome you thought i was on the show.

It’s the late 1960s, and in the new technology of cryonics, a California TV repairman named Bob sees an opportunity to help people cheat death. But freezing dead people so scientists can reanimate them in the future is a lot harder than it sounds. Harder still was admitting to the family members of people Bob had frozen that he’d screwed up. Badly.
the latest episode of THIS AMERICAN LIFE – #354: “Mistakes Were Made” is EXCELLENT.
yesterday {monday 21st april 2008} and for a few scattered days over the next 2 weeks i will be doing some workshops and hanging out with the kids at The Spot.
my first introduction to The Spot was a couple years ago when my man Charlie T; “the educator” from the winnie coopers was working up here and i came up with him to check it out… now my mate Warren M; “Rezadent” from the hip-hop duo Fortune – is the co-ordinator at The Spot for the “Get Ready For Work” programme. and for the next couple of weeks the spot’s in house designer is on his honeymoon, so i’m there to give the kids a fresh perspective and do some photography with them… it should be interesting.
it is also interesting having to travel to “work” as someone who has worked from home for the last few years, it is a big hoo-har to have to co-ordinate with benita and juggle our one car. i’ll keep ya updated.
anyway, here are some shots from day one at The Spot: {taken with my phone and the spot’s beat up canon 300D}
i just came across this and thought, here is some stuff that i know will be happening in my life in the future… and probably anyone els who has kids…

from a Phillip K. Dick’s short story
{note: this is pretty much for my own records and my own reference}
my internet tube provider is a local gold coast mob:
On The Net
my current plan with them is the
ATF24000C Turbo Pers ADSL 24000/1000 – 12/23Gb Cap
Total Monthly Downloads/incoming = 35GB
Peak 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday = 12GB
Off-Peak is all other times = 23GB
{no charge for uploading/outgoing}
Monthly Access Fee = $69 plastic australian dollars.
{that’s $63.96 US dollars or “greenbacks” as those yankie devils call it}
and it’s a 12 month contract.
so that breaks down for my daily usage as {roughly}
between 7 and 7 weekdays is 385MB a day
off peak – is 742MB a day
i got a gig a day in downloads…
as far as speed goes, i’m pretty much near the fastest speeds available to the public in australia.
“ADSL 2″
upload speed is between 600 and 700 Kbps
download is between 6000 and 8300 Kbps
yes i know it’s all the hype….
and i know that within a couple of weeks of it launching people are already over the hype…
but i love it.
{and doesn’t hurt that Justin Ouellette who started originally was from vimeo}
so i present you with my first muxtape:
djpaine.muxtape.com
over a year ago Jolane and i were shooting the breeze about how to have a successful internet service. i said the no brain winner would be a website service that collates and aggregates all the social platforms into one easy interface. somewhere you could see everything and even update status’ from the same interface… Jolane said it was a stupid idea and so i had to just sit and wait for some other genius to build it.
now there are {in my opinion} three services fighting for my affection:
profilactic
social thing
friend feed
let’s take a closer look:
1} Profilactic
i heard about the horribly named profilactic from cnet’s “the real deal” podcast and i dig it alot. basically you sign up and you can choose from 170+ online services that you use – put in your details for the services you want to share, choose if it’s in your mash up, and bam. done. it is very cool and the lay out is nice, also the attitude of the guys behind it is hip. you can jump onto my profile and see a “mash up” of everything i’m doing here: my profilactic mashup
2} Social Thing
got a beta invite to this new service, it allows you to add facebook, flickr, pownce, twitter, vimeo etc, not many services, {no one can touch profilactic’s 170 services} and then when i sign in i can see everything i have online on those services… no profile pages {yet} what it does well is allow me to post a single status update on social thing and it pushes it out to the services you have on there that allow status updates. that is cool.
3} Friend Feed
and last we have the much hyped friend feed- these guys have somehow got all the tech geek hipsters on board and there is a lot of rah rah about these guys. i sorta don’t get it yet {as to why people are raving about them} you can add up to 35 popular online services… as far as why i think people are loving it is because you can easily find and add friends {so it’s almost it’s own social platform} and {probably} the biggest reason, you can comment on anything that comes up in the stream from anyone- the comments appear on friend feed. that is a brilliant idea. so friend feed is almost it’s own platform…
my friend feed profileok, so at this early stage of evaluation here is where i’m at:
i want profilactic’s massive choice of services and their funky attitude, i want social thing’s great status push & their good customer service and i want friend feed’s popularity and commenting.
i’ll keep messing around with them and keep you informed, i have 2 social thing invites left, so…
the artist blu
what can i say?
these a brilliant on so many levels.
they are made by the artist blu. i know nothing about him.
here is his website.
i love this on SO MANY LEVELS.
garfield minus garfield tumblr
from the site:
Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle….
i love living here in southport, in our large city block – there is the most diverse range of people on the Gold Coast {outside of the tourists in Surfers Paradise}. every age, economic, racial, social, whatever type is represented. when i was growing up, attending Coombabah High School {and hating every second of it} when people talked about scoring some drugs they talked about heading down to Little Norman Street, now i live on the start of that street! and for the most part the streets around here have been totally cleaned up. lots of young families moving in to the gorgeous old queenslander houses. anyway…
one of our neighbours is a man named Fred, he’s 50 years old, 6 foot 4 inches, born near Washington DC, raised between the USA and Japan, has seriously travelled the world and is married to the lovely little Sahlee from the Philippines. Fred would be one of the most eccentric people i know. He is generous, funny, can talk underwater, swear like a trooper and is a really good guy. He might turn up at your door at night drunk as a skunk ready to talk about the meaning of life and how lucky i am to be married to someone as beautiful & lovely as benita, but i’ll take that anyday over someone who doesn’t say hello. {for those who may know whom i’m talking about Fred reminds me of Robbie Butler mixed with Kramer of Seinfield and a dash of Pastor Kirby Lancaster}
one day Fred invited me to come along with him to the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise, as he explained “Now Darren, I’m not a member of the Southport club, I’m a member of Rotary Port Moresby Papa New Guinea.” i thought to myself – no need for an explanation, it’s an everyday occurrence that an american dude in australia is a member of a PNG rotary club….
now i have never been to any Rotary anything ever in my life. like any kid growing up in australia travelling the countryside, i always saw rotary club signs on many town’s signs when you rolled into a town, and wondered what they were… is Lion’s clubs the same? what do they do? unlike many people growing up anywhere, i also went to a very conservative baptist church and we heard about the evils of all Masonry style men’s clubs… and a lot of people threw out that things like Rotary clubs were recruiting grounds for the evil Masons… so i did some research for myself over the last few days and, man alive, these Rotarians do an amazing job of serving the world. you can read up all about them here. or on wikipedia here.
so this morning at 6:40am fred and i rode our bikes the few kilometres to the southport yacht club {great location} and had a wonderful breakfast with about 35 to 40 friendly old dudes, i was by far the youngest man there. the meeting kicked off around 7:20am with a prayer, some announcements etc and we heard about the work they are doing with Shelter Boxes around the world. all in all it was a good experience. everyone wore a big round name badge and a few of the guys said something along the line of “you’re a photographer?! excellent! we need a photographer.” they also said, “we’ll see you again won’t we??” “For Sure!” i replied. i tell you what, a lot of churches could learn a thing or two from these guys.
so after riding back home, picking up an old washing machine from fred over on marine parade, doing a little bit of filming project for fred and then coming home, i was sitting here ready to go by 9:45am. awesome.
last thing about fred: he’s off to Kuwait on friday {after a couple of weeks in melbourne/perth/indonesia} for three years for work! his wife Sahlee is staying here, and fred has asked us to look after her… we will mate…
there is a “meme” floating around the net – that is: there is a silly idea being talked about by web nerds and geeks…
THE SONG CHART.
here is the group on flickr.
basically you take a song and make a nerdy chart/graph/screenshot of it in action.
for example, here is what some consider to be the original:
that is Kelis’ horrible song “my milkshakes” chorus displayed in a graph.
got it?
ok.
here are my favourites, see if you can work out the artist and song.
and here are some honourable mentions, they are brilliant too.
and one of my all time favourites: robert smith’s iCal
so what are your favourite ones?
can you come up with one?
i’m trying to think of an original idea….
i’ll keep ya posted.
